Police have launched an investigation after a man was injured in a reported stabbing in Soho, with emergency crews rushing to one of central London’s busiest entertainment districts.
The Metropolitan Police were called to Greek Street, W1D, at around 4.30pm on Thursday, 23 July, following reports of a stabbing. A man in his 30s was treated by paramedics after suffering a stab wound to his leg and was taken to hospital.
The injury has since been described as non-life-threatening and non-life-changing, with officers confirming that no arrests have been made so far.
Met Police confirm Soho incident was isolated
The incident happened in one of London’s most popular tourist areas, where large crowds gathered as police and ambulance crews attended the scene.
A witness outside Simmons bakery said a fight had broken out before panic spread among people nearby.
The witness told London Now: “Everyone started panicking and I heard someone got stabbed.”
The Metropolitan Police said: “Urgent enquiries are ongoing. At this early stage of the investigation no arrests have been made.”
Inspector Hannah Woodfield, who works with policing teams in central west London, said the force understood why the incident would cause concern among visitors and residents.
“We understand news of this evening’s incident will be concerning for those visiting central London and of course the local community,” she said.
“This is believed to be an isolated incident, with no further threat to the public.”
Emergency services treated injured man at scene
The London Ambulance Service confirmed it received the call at 4.25pm on Thursday after reports of an incident on Greek Street.
A spokesperson said: “We sent resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer.”
The injured man was treated before being taken to a major trauma centre as a priority. His condition was later confirmed to be stable.
Following the incident, Met officers remained in the Soho area carrying out additional patrols. Police said residents and visitors could approach officers with any concerns while enquiries continued.
Security specialist David Spencer said: “Busy areas such as Soho can create challenges for emergency services because incidents often happen among large numbers of people. A visible police presence helps reassure the public while investigations take place.”
Police continue enquiries after central London disturbance
The stabbing report comes during a busy period for Soho, which attracts millions of visitors each year due to its restaurants, theatres, nightlife venues and shopping areas.
Greek Street is located close to some of London’s most popular attractions, including Leicester Square and Covent Garden, making the area particularly crowded during evenings and weekends.
Police have appealed for anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact officers by calling 101, quoting CAD 5506/23JUL. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
It is important to note, however, that early details of police investigations can change as further evidence is collected. Individual incidents should be assessed based on confirmed information from authorities rather than initial reports or witness accounts.
The Metropolitan Police said officers would continue enquiries while maintaining an increased presence in Soho following the incident.
