The long-awaited television continuation of Ridley Scott’s iconic science fiction franchise has finally received an official release date and a first glimpse at its lead characters. Announced during San Diego Comic-Con, showrunners Silka Luisa, Andrew Kosove, and Broderick Johnson unveiled an eerie trailer and first-look images for Blade Runner 2099.
The eight-episode limited series, executive produced by Ridley Scott, arrives five years after the project was first announced in 2021. Streaming bosses confirmed that the show will mark a major global launch for Prime Video later this year.
Sci-fi enthusiasts will not have to wait for weekly instalments, as Prime Video confirmed that all eight episodes will drop simultaneously across more than 240 countries and territories on 25 November. The story takes place in Los Angeles 50 years after the events depicted in Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 feature film Blade Runner 2049.
Set in a futuristic urban backdrop controlled by synthetic life forms, the plot revolves around an unlikely alliance formed to prevent the city’s collapse. Hunter Schafer stars as Cora, a fugitive forced into becoming a Blade Runner—a specialized officer tasked with hunting down rogue Replicants.
Alongside Schafer, Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeoh portrays Olwen, a dying Replicant Blade Runner executing a final mission. Together, the duo must hunt down a runaway android holding a secret capable of destroying their fragile society.
“Fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, Los Angeles has been reborn, just not by humanity,” says a spokesperson at Prime Video. “Cora, a fugitive in a final bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. Forced to partner with Olwen, a Replicant days from dying, she hunts down a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse their fragile city.”
UK viewers looking to watch the series upon its release can access the platform via standalone or full membership tiers. A Prime Video-only subscription starts at £7.99 per month in the UK, while a standard full Amazon Prime subscription, which includes video streaming and delivery benefits, costs £8.99 per month.
The production serves as one of the most high-profile television releases scheduled for late 2026, extending a cinematic legacy that first began with Ridley Scott’s original 1982 masterpiece.
