British actor James Norton has recalled the alarming moment he suffered a severe drop in blood sugar levels during a high-profile Hollywood gala dinner. Speaking on a new episode of the Table Manners podcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware on 23 July 2026, the 41-year-old Happy Valley star described racing against time to avert a medical emergency in front of an A-list audience.
The star-studded dinner, hosted by GQ magazine, was held to honour cultural icons including Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. However, for the actor, the prestigious evening rapidly devolved into a health crisis as his glucose levels plummeted mid-event.
Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 22, Norton relies on a continuous glucose monitor alongside regular insulin injections to manage his condition daily. Prior to the starter, he administered his standard dose of insulin in anticipation of consuming bread or carbohydrate-dense dishes.
However, the opening course comprised solely a small portion of smoked trout containing no carbohydrates, causing his blood sugar to drop precipitously just as speeches commenced.
“I sat there having taken my insulin and eaten this trout, thinking, ‘I have 10 minutes before I pass out,’ and I couldn’t interrupt the speeches,” stated James Norton, British actor and type 1 diabetic.
As he began sweating and feeling unwell, Norton slipped away to seek assistance from staff behind the top table. Venue staff responded immediately to prevent insulin shock, leading to an extraordinary scene where a piping hot plate of potatoes was delivered directly to his seat during Nicole Kidman’s speech.
Alongside recounting the gala incident, Norton discussed his casting in director Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles biographical project. The ambitious cinematic undertaking consists of 4 distinct feature films set for global release in 2028.
The 41-year-old actor will portray Brian Epstein, the legendary manager who guided The Beatles to international fame during the 1960s. In the project, the band members will be played by Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.
“Managing chronic conditions during intensive filming schedules and high-profile public appearances requires constant vigilance regarding bodily signals,” explained Mette Poulsen, certified healthcare advisor at the Diabetes Association.
Hypoglycaemia, or dangerously low blood sugar, occurs when circulating insulin levels exceed physiological requirements relative to carbohydrate intake and physical exertion. Without rapid administration of fast-acting glucose, individuals risk severe disorientation, loss of consciousness, or medical shock.
It is important to note, however, that symptoms of low blood sugar and physiological responses vary from person to person, and expert advice from a qualified medical doctor or endocrinologist should always be sought regarding diabetes management and insulin dosing.
Following the timely delivery of carbohydrates, Norton quickly stabilized his glucose levels, allowing him to enjoy the remainder of the evening without further medical complications.
